Using the Sony ICD-UX71 Digital Audio Recorder

Note

Digital audio recorders can be borrowed from the ATC. Visit the ATC in Fuller Labs, call x5220, or send e-mail to atc@wpi.edu for information on borrowing a digital audio recorder.
  1. On the back side of the Recorder, slide the "Hold" button to the downward position. This will power on the recorder.
  2. On the Recorder screen you will see the default timecode of --h--m--s, the folder you are currently in, your battery charge, and the current file number.
  3. When you are ready to record audio, press the Record button on the side of the Recorder.
  4. You can press the Record button if you need to pause at all during your recording. To resume, simply press the Record button again.
  5. When you are ready to stop recording, press the "Stop" button. The file will save. You can record multiple audio clips on the memory stick.
  6. When you are finished with the Recorder for an extended period of time, slide the "Hold" button to "ON" to power off the Digital Audio Recorder. The screen will flash briefly and then the screen will go blank.

Playing Back Audio

  1. Use the "Fastforward" and "Rewind" buttons to scroll through and select a file.
  2. To play the file selected, press the Play button. You can use the "Fastforward" and "Rewind" buttons to navigate to a specific time within the file or "Stop" to end playback.
  3. When you are finished with the Recorder for an extended period of time, slide the "Hold" button to "ON" to power off the Digital Audio Recorder. The screen will flash briefly and then the screen will go blank.

Copying Audio Recorder Files to a PC

  1. On the bottom of the Recorder (with the front controls facing up), slide the base cover off.
  2. Connect the recorder into an available USB slot on your computer.
  3. Power the Recorder on by sliding the "Hold" button to the downward position.
  4. Your computer should read the memory stick as a Removable Media Drive Drive.
  5. Open the Removable Media Disk drive from My Computer and copy the audio files to a location on your PC.

Deleting Audio Files

Caution

Once you delete a file from the Recorder, you cannot recover it!

  1. Press "Menu" button on the recorder.
  2. Use the arrow up and down buttons to navigate through the file list on the screen.
  3. Once your file is selected, press and hold the "Menu" button.
  4. Use arrow up and down buttons to navigate to "Erase a File" on the screen and press "ENT."
  5. Select "Execute" on the screen and press the "ENT" button again.
  6. Once the file is deleted, press the "Menu" button to exit.
