Controlling the Initial Display in a PDF File

Benefits of Converting an Electronic Document into a PDF File

• As the author, you are able to control what readers of your document see upon opening the file, such as any bookmarks or thumbnails. Readers may otherwise be unaware of these navigation tools if they do not see them upon initially opening the file.

Controlling the Display

1. Open the PDF file in which you want to set initial display options. Open the File menu, and select Properties.
   
   
2. On the Document Properties window that appears, select the Initial View tab.
   
   
3. The default display option for document navigation is Page Only. You may change this to reflect a variety of other navigation displays that include bookmarks, thumbnails (called Pages), attachments, or layers, in addition to the first page of your document. The recommended setting for WPI’s Electronic Theses & Dissertations is Bookmarks Panel and Page.
   
   To adjust this, open the Navigation Tab dropdown menu and select the desired display.
   
   
4. The default page layout, listed as default, shows only a portion of the first page of your document. You may change this to reflect a variety of other layout options that include Single Page, Two-Up, and several others. The recommended setting for WPI’s Electronic Theses & Dissertations is Single Page.
   
   To adjust this, open the Page Layout dropdown menu and select the desired layout.
   
   
5. The default magnification for your document is set at a default level of 95.3%, labeled as Default. You may change this to reflect a variety of other magnifications, including Actual Size, Fit Page, Fit Width, and a number of different percentage magnifications. The recommended setting for WPI’s Electronic Theses & Dissertations is Fit Width.
   
   To adjust this, open the Magnification dropdown menu and select the desired level.
