Student Group Tools

Note:

When a course instructor creates a group, they have a number of tools that they can enable for their students. Many of these tools are also availble for general course use.

Only course instructors, teaching assistants, and content builders can create groups and give them access to these tools. Students can access their group's content pages by clicking on Groups on the side menu, or by expanding the My Groups toolbar and selecting a tool from there.

 

Student Group Tools

Within a group, students have access to course builder tools in order to facilitate group participation. The following list provides general descriptions of each feature as well as a link to the pages to the faculty help pages.
ToolDescription
Blogs Sets up a shared blog for the whole group. Entries can be posted by any member. Can be graded.
Collaboration Provides the group with a private chatroom.
Discussion Board A private discussion board is created for the group.
Send Email Members of the group can send emails to the whole group.
File Exchange Group members can upload and download files for simple transfer and storage.
Journals Similar to a private blog. Can be graded.
Tasks Students and instructors can define tasks for themselves and mark off as they complete them.
Wikis Creates a private wiki for group access. Can be graded.

Each of these features can be enabled or disabled per group by a course builder, teaching assistant, or instructor.

Group Homepage

Students can access their group's homepage by clicking on Groups on the side menu, or by expanding the My Groups toolbar and selecting Group Homepage.
A group's homepage contains links to all available group tools, as well as any modules that the group has enabled. Modules can be enabled with the Add Personal Module button.
Modules are handy widgets and tools that can be placed on the group homepage.
Here is a list of useful modules that students and instructors can include in a group's homepage.
Module Description
Alerts View course announcements and alerts.
Calculator A basic calculator tool.
Content Collection: Course Content Display links to the content collection folders for the courses you are enrolled in. Note: You must have permission to a folder to view it.
Dictionary Search and display a dictionary for definitions.
My Announcements Display institution, organization and course announcements that are relevant to you.
My Calendar Display institution, organization and course calendar events that are relevant to you.
My Tasks Display personal tasks.
Needs Attention Creates a private wiki for group access. Can be graded.
Report Card Display your grades.
Textpad Create HTML formatted text using the Manage Textpad Module Settings.
Thesaurus Search and display a thesaurus for synonyms and antonyms of words.
To Do Keep on top of your course work. Display all items due and past due for your courses.
What's New Keep up to date with your courses. Display notices of what is new in your enrolled courses.
