Restricting Content to Particular Students or Groups

Why?

There are often times when you may wish to post content for particular students to view, such as a make up assignment for a missed class, or for a group working on a project. The Adaptive Release feature allows you to set criteria for content items that restricts the content item to only particular students or groups. This feature is more advanced than the Groups feature, but offers more flexibility.

  1. For the content item you want to restrict access to, click the Manage button next to the content item.
  1. Click the Adaptive Release link.

Note

On the Adaptive Release page you can only set one criteria, although several criteria options are available on the page. If you want to set multiple criteria, click Adaptive Release: Advanced.

Restricting by Date

  1. If you want to restrict the content by date, select a date range in the Date field.
  1. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Submit.

Restricting to Specific Users or Groups

Note

If you want to restrict content to a group, you first need to create your group if you have not done so already. If you not planning to use the other group features, leave the checkboxes for the Group Options blank when creating your group. The restricted content only appears to the Instructors and TA's from the student view if they are added to the group. Otherwise it can be viewed from the Control Panel.

  1. If you are making content available to only one or two students, select the Browse button to search for the student name(s), then check off the name(s) you wish to add. For a group, select the group name and then click on the right arrow to add the group to the Selected Course Groups list.

Tip

Click on the Search button without typing anything in to view the entire class list.

  1. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Submit.

Restricting Based on a Gradebook Item

  1. Gradebook criteria allow you to restrict content to students who have completed and/or achieved a particular score on an assignment or exam linked to the Gradebook. In the Select a Gradebook Item field, select an item in the gradebook from the dropdown menu. The gradebook item must have been created previously.
  2. At Select Condition, indicate whether an attempt or a score is required for access to the content item.
  1. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Submit.

Caution

For items with an associated gradebook entry, such as Assignments and Quizzes, the item name appears to the students as a gradebook entry, but they do not see the item associated with it until they have met the criteria.

Restricting Based on Review Status

  1. If you are tracking student reviews of specific content items, you can restrict content to students until a particular content item has been reviewed. At the Select an item field, click Browse to open the Course Map in a separate window. Select the appropriate item from the Course Map.
  1. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Submit.
