Grading Discussion Board Participation

Why

Just as you may grade discussion in a traditional classroom, you can grade discussion in a myWPI course site. As of the Fall of 2007, myWPI includes an option for grading discussion boards.

Enabling Discussion Board Grading

Grading options are enabled when adding or modifying a forum. You cannot enable grading for the entire discussion board tool at once. Grading must be turned on individually for each forum.

When adding or modifying a discussion board forum, the grade settings appear in the third section of the Add Forum page or the Modify Forum page.

  1. To grade students on their participation in the entire forum, select Grade Forum and enter a point value in the Points possible field.
  2. To grade students on their participation in each thread within the forum, select Grade Threads. When this option is selected, a Points Possible option appears each time a thread is started.

Caution!

When Grade Threads is selected as the grading option, students cannot create new threads - only a course maintainer (instructor, TA, or course builder) can create new threads.

Grading Participation in a Forum

  1. Open the Discussion Board. On the list of forums, each forum that has grading enabled displays an icon in the Grade column.
  2. Click the icon in the Grade column. A list of students appears.
  3. Click the Grade button for a student. A page displaying the student's posts in the forum appears.
  4. Evaluate the posts and enter a grade in the Grade field.
  5. Click Submit to add the grade to the Grade Center.

Grading Participation in a Thread

  1. Open the Discussion Board.
  2. Open a forum and select a thread that has grading enabled. A thread that has grading enabled displays an icon in the Grade column.
