Virus Protection for Your PC

January 22, 2007

McAfee VirusScan software is available to you as faculty of WPI for your WPI office computer as well as for your home computer*. There are two parts required to keep your computer free of viruses:

  1. virus scanning engine
  2. virus definition files.

McAfee VirusScan, the antivirus software that WPI supports, includes both of these parts. After installing the scanning engine it is important to install the latest definition files, and to keep these updated regularly to ensure that they recognize and clean the latest viruses. Computers on WPI's ADMIN domain are configured to update automatically. Other computers, including those not on the domain, can also be configured to auto-update. Details about installing and using McAfee VirusScan are available on the Helpdesk's Virus Information webpage.

Another tool to help prevent viruses and other intrusions into the Windows operating system is Windows Update. Performing Windows Updates can greatly improve your system's performance and reduce the risk of potential virus infections. Windows Update is the online extension of Windows. Use Windows Update to download items such as security fixes, critical updates, the latest Help files, drivers, and Internet products. New content is added to the site regularly, so you can get the most recent updates and fixes to protect your computer and keep it running smoothly. Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ for more information.

* Members of the WPI community may NOT give copies of this software to other companies, organizations, or government agencies. WPI personnel may freely copy antiviral software to their PCs, as long as those machines are not used for external business purposes
