Managing the Volume of Discussion Board Postings

November 7, 2005

Discussion boards can, and often do, generate a great deal of conversation between students. Those conversations often segue into different topics, take place over several days, and may involve upwards of 50-80 postings per topic. As such, the conversations may be difficult to follow for some students, and enables less active students to refrain from posting regularly.

In response to this challenge, break the class up into separate discussion forums of no more than seven students. Instead of reading and responding to multiple threads from 20 other students, group members would only read and respond to six of their peers. When the forum discussions near an end, and in an effort to expose all students to all perspectives, ask students from one group to summarize the postings from another group.
