Help For New and Current Faculty...

Starting Out

Welcome to the WPI Community! As a new faculty member, you are entitled to certain benefits and responsibilities with regards to the computing facilities available through the WPI Computing and Communications Center. Some of the benefits include: an @wpi.edu e-mail address, access to many academic software titles, and personal web space on the WPI systems. Responsibilities are outlined in the Acceptable Use Policy.

NOTICE FOR NEW FACULTY: If you have not done so already, you should contact the Helpdesk concerning Faculty Technology Orientation, held each term.

Most offices will come equipped with a computer already setup and ready to work on the WPI network. Depending on your department, this computer will be setup by the CCC Helpdesk or by a technical contact within your own department. If you have a personal computer or laptop that you wish to setup for use on the WPI Network, please see the Network Operations Guide for Faculty.

Accessing Your Accounts

WPI has various accounts available to faculty. Those that are used most often include:

Each of these accounts is explained in further detail in our Accounts section.

After your department submits a CCC Account Request form, you will be notified that your accounts have been created and that your passwords are ready to be picked up. You will need to bring a picture ID to the Main CCC Office, located in Fuller Laboratories Room 213, to claim your passwords, or they may be distributed to you at New Faculty Technology Orientation. Also note that your individual academic department may also have computing facilities and accounts that will need to be set up independently. Please contact the administrative assistant(s) in your department for further details.

Never reveal any of your passwords to another person, or make any of your WPI accounts available to another person. CCC system administrators who must access your accounts for legitimate purposes will first obtain your permission, and confirm your identity; they will not ask for your password. For more information you may visit Password Responsibilities and Precautions.

Accessing Your E-mail

E-mail at WPI is an essential method of communication with students, faculty, staff members, and other contacts both within and without the WPI community. If your department will be setting you up to use their own e-mail accounts, and you want to check your e-mail from one account only, you will need to setup forwarding to that departmental account. In any other case, we recommend using either the Outlook Web Access interface or the Outlook client.

If you need to communicate information pertinent to WPI academics or business to the entire campus via email, contact the Helpdesk first. Please refrain from sending email of a personal nature to the entire campus; it is a violation of the AUP. See also E-mail Etiquette.

Network

Drive Mapping

Each faculty member has access to 750 Megabytes of personal and web storage space on the network server (named Toaster). One method of accessing it using Windows is called Mapping a Network Drive, which makes the space appear as another drive on your computer for easy file saving and access.

For directions on how to do this, please see our page on Mapping a Network Drive.

Accessing Software at WPI

As a faculty member at WPI, you are allowed access to many different software packages, including a number of different Microsoft titles. The titles, version and licenses currently available at WPI are listed on the Network Software Page. In order to access and install them, visit our SMS Software Installation Page. If you need to request additional software, please consult our Software Request Policy or contact the Helpdesk.

Getting a Laptop on WPI's Wireless Network

Campus locations equipped with wireless access points and wireless card recommendations can be found on the Wireless Networking Page. Visit the Wireless Configuration Page for registration & configuration directions.
