Configuring Outlook 2007 for an IMAPS Connection to the Exchange Server

In an effort to keep WPI's computing environment secure, the IMAP protocol has been disabled on Wednesday, August 31, 2005 at 9 PM, in favor of its secure version, IMAPS.

NOTE: If you are using IMAP to connect to the WPI Microsoft Exchange Server so that you don't need to use the WPI VPN client, we have made it possible to run Outlook 2003 with Exchange communicating over native Exchange protocols by using Outlook Anywhere; thus eliminating the need to IMAP to the Exchange Server. If you have any questions about this, please contact the CCC Helpdesk at x5888. If you'd still like to use IMAPS please see the instructions below.

How to create an Outlook profile using IMAPS

  1. Open the Mail Setup dialog box by navigating to the Control Panel and double-click Mail (Classic View).
    Note: If you are using Control Panel Category View, double-click User Accounts, and then click Mail.

  2. Click Show Profiles.

  3. Click Add...

  4. Choose a descriptive Profile Name (such as your username) and click OK.

  5. Check the Manually configure server settings... checkbox and click Next.

  6. Choose Internet E-mail and click Next.

  7. On the Internet E-mail Settings window, enter your User Information, Server Information, and Logon Information.
    E-mail Address: WPI E-mail address
    Account Type: IMAP
    Incoming mail server (IMAP): exchange.wpi.edu
    Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.wpi.edu
    User Name: WPI Username
    Password: STUDENT or ADMIN Domain Password

  8. Click on the More Settings ... button.
  9. Click on the Advanced tab and choose the SSL option in the dropdown menu below Incoming server (IMAP): and click OK to close the Internet E-mail Settings window.

  10. Click Next to close the Internet E-mail Settings (IMAP) window.
  11. If all goes well, you should see this screen...

  12. Click Finish, and you will be returned to the Mail Profiles screen. If you have more that one Outlook profile the computer, you can choose Prompt for a profile to be used, that way you will be presented with a list of profiles to choose from each time you open Outlook. Unless you have more than one profile, simply leave it on Always use this profile and choose the profile you just created. Click OK to continue.

How to Modify an Existing Outlook Profile to support IMAPS

  1. Open the Mail Setup dialog box by navigating to the Control Panel and double-click Mail (Classic View).

  2. Click Show Profiles.

  3. Select the profile to modify and Click Properties

  5. Choose your IMAP/SMTP profile and select Change.

  6. Click More Settings...

  7. Click on the Advanced tab and choose the SSL option in the dropdown menu below Incoming server (IMAP): and click OK to close the Internet E-mail Settings window.

  8. Click Next to close the Internet E-mail Settings (IMAP) window.
  9. Click Finish to close the E-mail Accounts window.
  10. Click Close to close the Mail Setup window.
  11. Click Ok to close the Mail window.
