Configuring Outlook 2003 for a POP3S Connection to the Exchange Server
In an effort to keep WPI's computing environment secure, the POP3 protocol will be disabled on Wednesday, August 31, 2005 at 9 PM, in favor of its secure version, POP3S.
NOTE: If you are using POP3 to connect to the WPI Microsoft Exchange Server so that you don't need to use the WPI VPN client, we have made it possible to run Outlook 2003 with Exchange communicating over native Exchange protocols by using Outlook Anywhere; thus eliminating the need to use POP3 to the Exchange Server. How to create an Outlook profile using POP3S
- Open the Mail Setup dialog box by navigating to the Control Panel and double-click Mail (Classic View).
Note: If you are using Control Panel Category View, double-click User Accounts, and then click Mail.
- Click Show Profiles.

- Click Add...

- Choose a descriptive Profile Name (such as your username) and click OK.

- Choose Add a new e-mail account and click Next.

- Choose POP and click Next.

- On the Internet E-mail Settings (POP3) window, enter your User Information, Logon Information, and Server Information.
User Name: WPI Username
Password: STUDENT or ADMIN Domain Password
Incoming mail server (POP): exchange.wpi.edu
Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.wpi.edu

- Click on the More Settings ... button.
- Click on the Advanced tab and check the This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) underneath Incoming server (POP): and click OK to close the Internet E-mail Settings window.

- Click Next to close the Internet E-mail Settings (POP3) window.
- If all goes well, you should see this screen...

- Click Finish, and you will be returned to the Mail Profiles screen. If you have more that one Outlook profile the computer, you can choose Prompt for a profile to be used, that way you will be presented with a list of profiles to choose from each time you open Outlook. Unless you have more than one profile, simply leave it on Always use this profile and choose the profile you just created. Click OK to continue.

How to Modify an Existing Outlook Profile to support POP3S
- Open the Mail Setup dialog box by navigating to the Control Panel and double-click Mail (Classic View).
Note: If you are using Control Panel Category View, double-click User Accounts, and then click Mail.
- Click Show Profiles.

- Select the profile to modify and Click Properties

- Click E-mail Accounts....

- Choose View or change existing e-mail accounts and click Next.

- Choose your POP/SMTP profile and select Change.

- Click More Settings...

- Click on the Advanced tab and check the This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) underneath Incoming server (POP): and click OK to close the Internet E-mail Settings window.

- Click Next to close the Internet E-mail Settings (POP3) window.
- Click Finish to close the E-mail Accounts window.
- Click Close to close the Mail Setup window.
- Click Ok to close the Mail window.
