Network Drive Mapping On Campus (Windows XP Pro)

Who should use this page?

This page is designed to be used by people who need to map their network drive when using Windows XP Professional as their operating system and are connected to the STUDENT or ADMIN domain.

For mapping network drives without connecting to a domain, click here.

Step 1: Connecting to the domain

As a user of Windows XP, joining the computer to the domain is optional before mapping any network drives. To setup the computer on a domain, directions have been prepared and placed at these links:

Note: Only STUDENT users can join the domain by themselves. ADMIN users must be added manually by the CCC Staff, so if you need help joining the ADMIN domain, please contact the Helpdesk.

After finishing the above process, the computer will prompt to be restarted. Go ahead and do so, and when it reboots, another prompt for a username, password, and domain will appear. Please enter your STUDENT or ADMIN username, the appropriate password, and the appropriate domain name.

Note: In the case of accessing the STUDENT domain, your password is the same as the one you use to login to Windows lab computers.

Step 2: Mapping the drive

  1. Right-click on the My Computer icon.
  2. Click on "Map Network Drive..."
  3. Click on the down arrow next to the Drive text box.
  4. Select a free drive letter such as "R:"
  5. In the path field, type the path you wish to map to. (View example paths.)
  6. The "Reconnect at logon" box should be checked ONLY if you wish to have this folder mapped EVERY time you log into this machine. So you know, this folder will only be mapped when you login with your respective login and password, and not for anyone else.
  7. Click Finish.

Step 3: Success!

If everything went as planned, the drive should be successfully mapped and good to go. Below are the answers to several questions that might arise during or after mapping a drive.
