How to Join the STUDENT Domain (Windows XP Pro)

Please do not attempt to join the domain from off-campus.

Note: Please be advised that once the computer is joined to the STUDENT domain, the Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) client will be installed on the computer. The SMS client primarily provides software distribution capabilities, but also allows for hardware management and Helpdesk troubleshooting.

  1. First you have to set the name of your PC on the network. Right-click on the My Computer icon that is either on the desktop or in the Start menu and choose the Properties menu item:

  3. The System Properties window will open:

  5. Click on the Computer Name tab, and you will see the following:

  7. Press the Network ID button and the Network Identification Wizard opens. Press Next to continue:

  9. Choose This computer is part of a business network... This tells the computer that you're connecting to WPI's network. Press the Next button to continue:

  11. Choose My company uses a network with a domain. This tells the computer that you're connecting to a Windows domain on your network. Press the Next button to continue:

  13. Make sure you have created your STUDENT account (at the STUDENT Account Maintenance page) and registered your computer on the residential network (at the Network Registration page). Please press the Next button to continue:

  15. Enter your STUDENT account username and password and enter STUDENT in the domain box. Press the Next button to continue:

    Note: if you receive an Unable To Find Domain error, try it again with STUDENT.ADMIN.WPI.EDU instead of STUDENT.

  17. In the Computer name field type in the name of your PC (which should be the same as your username and the name registered on the Network Registration page ). In the Computer domain field type in STUDENT. This will tell the computer to login to the STUDENT domain. Press the Next button to continue:

  19. Once again, enter your STUDENT username and password, and fill in STUDENT in the domain box. This will join your computer to the STUDENT domain so you may receive courseware. Press the Next button to continue:

  21. Add your STUDENT user account to the local access list for your computer, so you may login to your computer using your domain account. Press the Next button to continue:

  23. Choose Other: Administrators so you will have full access to your computer using your domain account. Press the Next button to continue:

  25. Congratulations! You are now finished. Please restart your computer so your new settings can take effect. You can now login to your computer using your STUDENT username by selecting the STUDENT domain in the drop down box on startup.

Note: Once you log into your computer with your STUDENT account, a new profile will be made on your computer for that account. If you wish to copy the settings of a profile you have already been using, see the Windows XP Professional Profile Copying page.

If you decide that you do not want to login to the STUDENT domain, choose the Workgroup option and type in one of the following based on your computer location. Please be advised that if you choose not to join the STUDENT domain, you will not be eligible to utilize courseware or network printing.

Below is a list of recommended workgroups determined by location of residence.
