VPN Errors

Many users require access to WPI CCC resources from off-campus. Many of these services require use of the VPN (Virtual Private Network) in order to connect. This page will help you identify some of the common errors associated with VPN use.

Things to check...

Are you running the latest version of the VPN?

The latest version of the VPN client is required. Check the Network Operations VPN page for the latest client.

Are you behind a firewall?

The VPN attempts to create a secure "tunnel" to the WPI network, and doing so requires an unrestricted connection to the internet. Most, if not all, firewalls will block VPN connections. This includes the built-in firewall capabilities of Windows XP that is enabled by default. Firewalls could prevent a connection to the WPI VPN.

Note: If you are connecting from a corporate network, check with your IT department before attempting to use the WPI VPN.

Are you behind a NAT router?

Many commercially available routers use what is called Network Address Translation. NAT essentially allows you to connect multiple machines to the internet using a single externally-known IP address. While this technology makes setting up a small network cheap and easy, it might also prevent a connection to the WPI VPN.

Tip: If your machine's IP address appears as 192.168.x.x, then you are most likely on a network that uses NAT.

Does your ISP support VPN connections?

Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) will not support or allow VPN connections via their service. If the VPN connection appears to drop after a certain duration, chances are your ISP is blocking the VPN. You may need to contact your ISP and check that a VPN connection is allowed using your service.

Is there another VPN client installed on your computer?

Other VPN clients have been known to be incompatible with the WPI VPN client. If you are attempting to connect from a computer with another VPN client, the other client must first be uninstalled prior to installing the WPI VPN.

Are you attempting to connect from outside the United States?

Some users experience difficulty with the VPN when attempting to connect from overseas. The long distances involved and the associated high latency of connections will make VPN use frustrating in these cases.
