Windows Vista Deployment at WPI
The IT Division is currently in the process of evaluating Windows Vista for use at WPI. At this time many of the academic software packages used at WPI are not yet supported in Windows Vista, so we cannot fully support Windows Vista across the campus.
Faculty and Staff with newly purchased computers should coordinate with IT to insure that the systems are configuredwith Windows XP Professional and all necessary software.
For students who have systems with Windows Vista we can only provide limited support.
If you have further questions on this please contact the helpdesk@wpi.edu.
Below are frequently asked questions about Windows Vista:
Q: Can I use Windows Vista on the WPI Campus?
A: Yes you may use Windows Vista on the WPI Campus, but understand support is limited at this time.
Q: What support is available for systems with Windows Vista?
A: Below is a summary of the supported and unsupported areas for Windows Vista at this time. As we complete testing and confirm areas of support for Vista we will update these pages.
- Wired Internet: Vista systems may be registered for wired ethernet connections on our network via NetReg.
- Wireless Internet: Vista systems may be configured using the WPI Wireless Certificate Tool from NetOps.
- Applications: A list of software and what is supported can be found here.
Q: What versions of Windows Vista are supported?
A: At this time we provide only basic support for all versions of Vista. In the future our planned support for Vista falls into two categories: limited and full support. Limited support refers to the fact that some services at WPI may require joining your machine to our domain which is not available in the Home versions of the product. The 64 bit editions of Vista may not be able to run some software applications even if they are supported for 32 bit versions.
