Writing/Erasing CDs in Windows XP
This guide aims to assist you in writing (i.e. burning) data and music CDs while also providing information to erase a CD-RW disc. As always, if you have any further questions or concerns while following this guide, please feel free to contact the Helpdesk directly.
Overview
How do I burn a data CD?
- Place a blank CD-R or CD-RW in the CD-R/RW drive of your personal computer.
- Open My Computer from either your Desktop or via Start > My Computer.

Double-click your CD-R/RW drive (usually D:\) to
open the disc.

You can now drag and drop files onto the CD in
preparation of writing the disc.

- When you have finished adding files to the CD, select Write these files to CD from the right navigation pane.
- Enter a name for your CD in the CD Name field.

Click Next.

Windows will proceed to write your files to the CD.

Click the Finish button if you only want one
copy, else check the box for additional copies and
continue.

How do I erase a data CD?
- Place the CD-RW disc you would like to erase into the CD-R/RW drive of your personal computer.
- Open My Computer from either your Desktop or via Start > My Computer.

Double-click your CD-R/RW drive (usually D:\) to
open the disc.

- Click Erase this CD-RW from the right navigation pane.

Click Next at the CD Writing Wizard
screen.

Windows will proceed to erase the files on the CD.

Click Finish to exit the wizard.

How do I burn a music CD?
- Place a blank CD-R or CD-RW in the CD-R/RW drive of your personal computer.
- In Windows, open Windows Media Player via Start > All Programs > Windows Media Player.

Select Burn from the options along the top of
the media player.

Drag and drop files into the Burn List and order
the files as you wish.

When all files have been added, please choose the
Start Burn option at the top of the media
player.

Windows Media Player will now burn each of the tracks
to your CD.
