Windows XP Professional Profile Copying

When you add your Windows XP Professional computer to a domain, a profile is created on your machine for each login name in that domain that you use on your computer. Sometimes students wish to copy the settings from the account they have been using already to this new profile. Or sometimes you wish to change how the Default profile is when you setup a new account or profile. By following the steps below, you will be able to accomplish these tasks.

Login as Administrator (or as a user with Admin privileges) to your computer. Right click on the My Computer icon on the desktop and choose the Properties menu item:

Properties Menu Item

The System Properties window will open. Click on the Advanced tab, and you will see something similar to the following:

Advanced Tab

Click on the Settings tab under User Profiles, and you will see something similar to the following:

User Profiles Settings Tab

Select/highlight the profile you wish to copy by clicking on the profile name, such as Administrator that is highlighted in the above picture. Press the Copy To... button and the Copy To dialog box will open:

Copy To

Press the Browse... button and the Browse For Folder dialog appears:

Browse For Folder

Select C:, then Documents and Settings, and then the profile name you wish to copy to. In the above picture we are copying to the profile named frankp. Press OK.

The Confirm Copy message appears as below. Press OK:

Confirm Copy

Press OK one more time and your profile has been copied successfully!
