Tera Term

Tera Term Pro with its SSH extension (TTSSH) is the recommended UNIX terminal application available for Windows users. This page will answer several questions that the WPI Community has had about this software. Any unanswered questions can be directed to the CCC Helpdesk.

  1. How Can I Install Tera Term?
  2. Why Should I use Tera Term?
  3. What Happened to Telnet?

How Can I Install Tera Term?

Tera Term Pro (TTSSH) is available to ADMIN users on the \\admin.wpi.edu\sys\netapps share. The installation file is in the Tera Term directory. Once the installation has finished, a shortcut to Tera Term will be placed on the desktop.

Students can no longer download Tera Term Pro. They should use PuTTY instead.

Why Should I Use Tera Term?

Tera Term SSH is a free client that allows users to make a secure connection to the WPI UNIX systems remotely via the SSH protocol. If you would like more information on SSH and secure connections, please visit the Secure Access page.

What Happened to Telnet?

The use of the Telnet protocol has been phased out due to security concerns. Telnet allows both passwords and other information to be transferred unencrypted, which makes users of the Telnet protocol vulnerable to network sniffing. Since August 1, 2003, users have been unable to connect to any CCC UNIX servers using the Telnet protocol.
