WPI's Virtual Private Network (VPN)
Software Requirements
- Either Mozilla 1.5 or newer or Firefox
- Sun's JRE 1.4.2 or newer
- A recent distribution with a 2.6 kernel
- The local root password
The following Linux distributions have been verified by Nortel or WPI to support the NetDirect VPN client and Firefox.
- Fedora Core 4
- Fedora Core 5
- Gentoo-r10
- Knoppix 4.0.2
- SUSE 10.0
- Ubuntu 6.06
If your distribution does not include a compatible version of Java, you may download one directly from Sun at http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
Directions
- Navigate in the web browser of your choice to http://vpn.wpi.edu.

- Log in with your CCC username and password.

- Click on the "Launch Netdirect VPN" link.

- A window will appear asking you for the password to the root
account on your local machine. Note that this is often a different
password than the one you log into your user account with.

- The confirmation banner will then be displayed.

- At this point, the VPN applet window will indicate that is has sucesfully
connected. You may safely minimize this window, but if you close it your
connection to the VPN will terminate.

- When you are ready to disconnect from the VPN client, you may do so simply by closing the browser window you logged into the portal page with.
