Using Single-Line Phones

This is a summary of the basic communications features of the WPI telephone system. Some features do not apply to all telephones on campus. The SPRE code (special prefix code) is a special digit entered to access features. The SPRE code is 1 (one).

Feature Action Procedure
Call Forward To Activate Lift handset, dial #, 1, hear regular dial tone, dial number where calls are to be forwarded, hang up.
To Cancel Lift handset, dial #, 1, hear regular dial tone, hang up.
Call Pickup To Respond Lift handset, dial SPRE code 1 plus 3, answer call.
Call Transfer* To Activate Switchhook flash or press LINK button, hear special dial tone, dial number, announce caller in privacy, hang up.
3-Way Conference* To Activate Switchhook flash or press LINK button, hear special dial tone, dial number, announce conference, switchhook flash or press LINK button to connect all callers, hangup when conference is completed.
Consultation Hold To Activate Hear special dial tone, dial number, consult privately, allow consulted party to hang up, you are reconnected to your original call.
Permanent Hold To Activate Switchhook flash or press LINK button, hear special dial tone, dial #, 4, hang up. (Your call is now on hold; if you hang up, your phone rings intermittently to remind you; if you do not hang up, there is no ring.)
To Return Lift handset. (If you did not hang up, switchhook flash or press LINK button.)
Ring Again To Activate Switchhook flash or press LINK button, hear special dial tone, dial SPRE code 1 plus 1, hear regular dial tone, hang up.
To Respond Hear short bursts of ringing, lift handset, (number is automatically dialed).
To Cancel Lift handset, dial SPRE code 1 plus 2, hear regular dial tone, hang up.
Speed Call * To Program (Controller Only) Lift handset, dial #, 2, hear regular dial tone, dial 1-, 2-, or 3-digit Speed Call access code, dial number to be stored, hang up.
To Change (Controller Only) Lift handset, dial #, 2, hear regular dial tone, dial 1-, 2-, or 3-digit Speed Call access code, dial new number to be stored, hang up.
To Erase (Controller Only) Lift handset, dial #, 2, hear regular dial tone, dial 1-, 2-, or 3-digit Speed Call access code, press * (number is automatically erased), hang up.
Stored Number Redial To Program Before a Call and To Use Lift handset, hear dial tone, dial SPRE code 1 plus 78, dial number to be stored, hang up. To use, lift handset, hear dial tone, dial SPRE code 1 plus 79, listen for ringback tone.
To Program During Active Call and To Use Switchhook flash or press LINK button, hear special dial tone, dial SPRE code 1 plus 78, hang up. To use, lift handset, hear dial tone, dial SPRE code 1 plus 79, listen for ringback tone.
Last Number Redial To Use Lift handset, hear dial tone, dial SPRE code 1 plus 89 (number is automatically dialed).
Camp-On To Respond Hear one quick beep during conversation, to receive new call, hang up, wait for phone to ring, answer call.
Voice Mail * To Respond Lift handset, hear Message Waiting dial tone, dial 5900 (voice mail), follow instructions to receive message.
Malicious Call Trace *+ To Use During Active Call Switchhook depress, hear special dial tone (call is placed on hold), dial SPRE code 1 plus 83 (you are connected back to call), hang up, immediately dial campus police at x5555. (Only calls placed from within the WPI telephone network can be traced.)
