Polymer Characterization and Production
The WPI Bioprocess Center is happy to announce an expansion of capabilities to include polymer (particularly biopolymer) characterization and biopolymer fermentations and processing.
- Using the DAWN-DSP Laser Photometer, absolute molecular weight determinations can be made from polymer solutions. Polydispersity and molecular size are also obtainable. The method involves HPLC size exclusion chromatography coupled with multiple angle laser light scattering (SEC/MALLS). The system uses 18 photo detectors placed at discrete angles around the sample cell to collect and analyze the scattered laser light.
- With the Bohlin DRS-F controlled stress rheometer, the following viscosity measurements can be performed: constant rate, constant stress, oscillatory behavior and yield stress. From these measurements, determinations of molecular weight and polydispersity are also obtainable. The rheometer has also been used to monitor broth viscosity during biopolymer fermentations.
Recent Characterizations and Applications
- SEC/MALLS MW characterization of modified polyacrylic acids
- MW characterization of gamma-(Poly)glutamic acid using static MALLS
- Yield stress comparisons between fat-free, low-fat and full-fat mayonnaise
