Problems

  • A student obtains this UV-Visible Spectrum for a compound that s/he has just synthesized. The upper trace corresponds to a concentration of 1.25*10-4 M; the bottom trace is from a ten-fold dilution of the first solution. What are the lmax and e values for the compound? (We are looking for five l,e pairs here, one for each maximum in the spectrum.)
    1. A Job's Method study was carried out for the reaction

      aA + bB ---> dD + fF

      Stock solutions of A and B containing 1 mmole per 10 mL of solution were prepared. These were used to prepare a series of 8 solutions containing varying amounts of A and B, but such that the total moles of A and B was maintained constant. The mass of product D obtained was measured.

      What is the mole ratio, b/a?

    2. A chemist reacts 0.200 g of copper acetate monohydrate, Cu(C2H3O2)2.H2O, with 0.160 g of glycine in water. S/he obtains 0.162 g of the product, Cu(C2H4NO2)2. What is the percent yield?
    3. The copper complex synthesized in problem 5 is found to suspend in a mixture containing 0.50 mL of CH2Br2 and 0.10 mL of CCl4. What is the density of the complex?
