Problems

  1. When Erlen Meyer performs the experiment, he begins by placing 20.2 mL N2 (this has been corrected for the volume of the syringe tip) in the syringe at 297 K and atmospheric pressure of 738.6 torr. He adds 5 mL of an unknown liquid and warms the syringe to 53.0 oC. At this temperature, he finds the total (corrected) volume occupied by the gas to be 31.3 mL. Calculate the vapor pressure of Erlen's unknown at 53.0 oC in both atm and torr.
  2. What is the purpose of fastening a pipet section to the barrel of the syringe?
  3. What should happen in step 17 of the experiment with only liquid in the syringe (i.e., no added N2 gas)? Be as specific as possible.
