Smoke obscuration measurements can be expressed in a variety of ways. This calculator allows the user to convert the results from one system of nomenclature into another.

Directions:

Click on the box that corresponds to the units you have.
Enter the numerical value.
Click on the "GO" button.
Read results from the other three boxes.

The four systems used in the calculator are:

D - Optical Density (1/meter, 1/foot)
k - Extinction Coefficient (1/meter, 1/foot)
Ob - Obscura (decibel/meter, decibel/foot)
Ou - % Obscuration (%Ob/meter, %Ob/foot)
