Opportunities

Courses of study are available for full-time students as well as full-time working professionals who may take advantage of opportunities available through WPI's evening and video-based distance learning programs.

For High School Graduates

High school seniors can apply for the five-year program in fire protection engineering. This gives high school graduates the opportunity to complete the undergraduate degree in a selected field of engineering and the master's degree in fire protection engineering in five years. Holders of B.S. degrees in the traditional engineering fields and the master's degree in fire protection engineering enjoy extremely good versatility in the job market. (See the WPI Undergraduate Catalog.)

For College Graduates

Students who already hold a B.S. degree in engineering, science or engineering technology may apply for graduate study at WPI. The more competitive students can complete the master's degree in fire protection engineering in as little as 12 months.

Students who already have a master's degree in another field of engineering or science may enroll in the doctoral program or pursue a second master's degree. With departmental approval, up to nine semester hours of appropriate graduate course work may be transferred from another university.

For College Students

College students already enrolled in undergraduate engineering, science or engineering technology programs may complete their degrees at their home institutions and apply for graduate study in fire protection engineering at WPI. Alternatively, students already enrolled at other universities may transfer and finish the B.S. degree as well as the master's degree in fire protection engineering at WPI. These students are encouraged to consult with the department of Fire Protection Engineering at WPI for help in selecting courses taken at other schools in order to best prepare for the graduate program in fire protection engineering.

Qualified undergraduate students may pursue the B.S. degree in one of the traditional engineering disciplines and the master's degree in fire protection engineering through the combined degree (B.S./M.S.) program. This approach saves time and expense, since up to 40% of the course credits counted toward the master's degree can also be counted towards the bachelor's degree.

For Practicing Professionals

On-campus fire protection engineering courses are scheduled in the evenings to accommodate full-time working professionals. And a wide range of courses is available to off-campus via the distance learning program.

Part-time students can finish the master's degree in as little as 20 months, depending on the number of credits taken each semester (See also Certificate Programs).

For Non-Degree-Seeking Students

Several options are available to individuals who wish to take specific courses for professional development or simply wish to find out what graduate education is all about without making an initial commitment to a degree program. Some courses may be taken for credit and applied towards a master's degree or a graduate certificate at a later date if the student decides to apply for admission to either of these programs (See Graduate Certificate).

Also, courses may simply be audited (at half tuition) or taken on a pass/fail basis. Courses that are audited or taken on the pass/fail basis are not transferable to degree programs.
