Fire Protection and Engineering Department

Department of Fire Prtoection and Engineering was created at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1979. This first-of-a-kind program serves as a crossroad for bringing together talents from many disciplines to focus on fire and explosion safety problems. Operating as a self-standing academic department, the center features formal degree and certificate programs in fire protection engineering, continuing education for the practitioner and research to uncover new knowledge about fire behavior and fire protection methods.

Research conducted at the center has involved fire protection engineering students and faculty as well as those from other academic departments, including civil engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science and management. Research areas have included computer fire modeling, building safety design and fire performance, explosion phenomena, regulatory reform, marine safety, fire performance of composites, protective clothing and fire detection and suppression. These and other research activities help WPI students and faculty remain on the cutting edge of fire technology.
