African Drumming and Dance Ensemble

The WPI African Percussion and Dance Ensemble is currently under the direction of Mohamed Kalifa Kamara. Annual performances include cultural festivals, formal concerts, Black History Month celebrations, educational programs in concert halls and schools, and television appearances.

Rehearsals are held weekly and focus on the drum and dance traditions of West African countries.  No prior dance or drum experience is required.  WPI owned instruments are made available to participants.

Mohamed Kalifa Kamara, a native of Guinea, is the leader of the Koliba Jazz Ensemble and the Spirit of Africa. Mr. Kamara has performed extensively throughout the world in festivals, ceremonies, receptions, and conferences. He serves also on the faculty of Berklee College of Music, Boston, MA.
