Research

Originally trained in the historical methodologies of the Annales School, my principal scholarly interests have been in the intellectual and cultural origins of the French Revolution. Work on the underground book trade during the Enlightenment led to doctoral research outside of France in the Old Regime Bishop-Principality of Liège, which is today a part of Belgium, and I continue to have a special interest in this small but complex country. Visit the Belgium-American Educational Foundation.

In addition to teaching courses on the history of France and on Western Intellectual History, I have developed several courses dealing with global history that reflect my abiding interest in both cultural-intellectual history and struggles for social justice, notably "Topics in Comparative Civilizations" (HI 3342) and "Contemporary World Issues in Historical Perspective" (HI 2341). I am also one of the associated faculty involved with the WPI International Studies Program.
