Majors

The Humanities and Arts major requires six units of work, including a major project of one unit. Students take courses (usually 1/3 unit each) from across the humanities and arts, or they may focus their program of study with a Concentration in one of thirteen different areas.

The major or double-major is excellent preparation for a variety of careers. Humanities and Arts graduates from WPI have gone to law, business, and medical schools, as well as to graduate programs in the discipline of their Humanities and Arts concentration. Some graduates have pursued careers as writers, teachers, military officers, engineers, or scientists. Other students have found work in the theatre as actors, technicians, or playwrights, or in music as composers or performers. Rigorous study in the humanities and arts gives graduates a career advantage by providing a good foundation in the Western cultural tradition and in the cultural diversity of the world, as well as developing strong skills in research, analysis, writing, literary and musical composition or performance.

At WPI, all students in the Humanities and Arts receive preparation as technological humanists. Our majors complete either the technical requirements within the major or a double major in a technical field. This educational experience gives them a distinct advantage in fields where solid knowledge of both science or technology and the humanities and arts is increasingly important, such as environmental studies, media technology, international affairs, or business. Whatever their specific area of concentration, majors in the humanities and arts gain an intellectual curiosity and openness to the diversity of human cultural achievements that enriches their lives and enhances their careers.

See Prof. Bland Addison for more information, and check the Humanities and Arts Concentrations to find an area of interest.
