Getting Started
Students may begin work in the Humanities and Arts with one of the Great Problems Seminars or the Project-Based Learning Community or an introductory course at the 1000-level in any area of the department. Students may begin at the 2000-level if they already have some background in the area of study. All courses, whatever the format or discipline, introduce the student to the study of the humanities and the basic skills, issues, and methods of inquiry in the humanities and arts. All students are strongly encouraged to take at least one 3000-level course before their concluding seminar or practicum.
WPI provides a great deal of flexibility in selecting the courses leading to completion of the Humanities and Arts Requirement. Students are encouraged to experiment and to take courses beyond the minimum requirement of one course in two different areas. The thematic coherence of courses in an area of focus leading to an inquiry seminar or practicum is not intended to impose strict rigidity in selection of courses. Students are also urged to consult with a Humanities and Arts Department faculty members about the selection of courses.
Below is a sample of from which most students select their first Humanities and Arts course. This is far from a comprehensive list of courses in each of these areas.
