3.0 Rebuilding the Globe/Sam Wanamaker

The purpose of this lesson is set the stage for the development of the new Globe by detailing some of the previous attempts to re-construct the Globe, as well as giving some insight into the character of Sam Wanamaker.

In addition to the resources cited in this section, the following books may provide additional information:

Adams, John Cranford. The Globe Playhouse: Its Design and Equipment. 1942.

Gurr, Andrew. Rebuilding Shakespeare's Globe. Routledge, NY, 1989.

The second book listed above is a possible candidate for assigned reading material as it covers many of the aspects of the creation of the new Globe Theatre. If it is not used in this manner, the foreword, written by Sam Wanamaker could be used as a reading assignment for this unit. This foreword is included in Appendix 2. In addition, clips from any of the movies listed can be utilized to show aspects of Wanamaker as an actor.
