Introduction

This document contains everything necessary to effectively teach an introductory course on the new Globe Theatre. It features two main sections: the Lesson Plans and the Slide Show. The Lesson Plans give all of the information needed to teach the course; the Slide Show provides an easy way to incorporate all of the suggested visual aides including photography and video images.

The Lesson Plans are broken down into six lessons: History of Theatre in England; History of the Globe Theatre; Rebuilding the Globe / Sam Wanamaker; Sam Wanamaker's efforts to re-establish the Globe; Design of the Globe; and The total experience of the Globe. One can start at the beginning and move through the entire set of lessons, page by page, or return to the Lesson Plans Table of Contents and jump around in any sequence. Each lesson is broken down into subsections containing detailed explanations such that no outside information is necessary to teach the course. However, all sources have been cited; if more information is required, one can simply click on the appropriate citation, and be brought to the corresponding reference in the reference pages. In addition, each lesson begins with a brief outline of what will be discussed in the lesson including a listing of references not cited in the text that can provide further information. Pictures, diagrams, and video images have been included in the lesson plans, and can be expanded for viewing. However, for actually teaching the course, an additional resource, the Slide Show, has been provided.

Appendices have been included in the Lesson Plans in order to further enhance this document, and provide further support in teaching this course. The first appendix presents a brief description of the key players in the development of the Globe. This resource may be printed, and used as a supplement to the class. Appendix Two contains some additional documents that provide support to the lessons and are also recommended as supplements. Finally, Appendix Three contains two grading schemes that may be incorporated with the lessons in order to evaluate students taking the course.

The Slide Show presents all of the pictures, diagrams, and video images required for the course, in the order of appearance in the Lesson Plans. In order to present a lesson, one must simply hook a computer to a projector, load up the slide show, and select the appropriate lesson. One can scroll through all six lessons in order, or return to the Slide Show Main Menu and jump from one lesson to another in any sequence.
