Advisor Retreat 2008

This year’s Retreat was built around a holistic approach to an off-campus experience.  We wanted to give participants the opportunity to think about the cultural aspects of going off campus and being more intentional about students’ growth throughout and beyond the experience.

Discussion and interaction will be focused on preparing advisors and students to deal with issues of different culture, racism, bigotry, poverty and perceptions of personal safety and comfort in a new place, whether it be Boston or Bangkok, Worcester or Windhoek.  Our guest facilitator, Jhon Velasco, from Montclair State University, directs the Center for Non-Violence and Prevention Programs and as Project Director, Department of Justice Grant to Reduce Violence Against Women on College Campuses.  He holds adjunct positions at both Montclair and the New School University – Eugene Lang College. Since 1995 Jhon has been an Independent Consultant on Diversity and Communication Issues and his work includes lecturing and conducting workshops in universities and professional settings on diversity including heterosexism, racism, sexism and multicultural issues, communication and team building skills. As always this retreat was designed to be interactive and collaborative.
