Spanish Track

Taking Spanish? Want to do an Interactive Project in Costa Rica or Puerto Rico, a humanities and arts project in Spain, or an exchange program in Monterrey, Mexico? Then you might want to plan an International Studies minor with a "Spanish Track."

An Interactive Project at Costa Rica or Puerto Rico (or another Global Project Center) counts as one unit of the three units required by the minor. One unit of Spanish language courses or other international courses from your Humanities and Arts or Social Science Requirements may count towards the minor’s international electives. All that remains is one unit (three courses) in the International Studies "core." The core requires one history course, one cross-cultural course, and HU 4411, Senior Seminar in International Studies. One unit of the minor may not double-count with other degree requirements.

Here are several examples of an Spanish track.  These are merely examples and the courses you choose could be different.

Interactive Project Option:

1 unit International Core (see below for more options)

HI 1341 Introduction to Global History

HU 3411 Pro-seminar in Global Perspectives
HU 4411 Senior Seminar in International Studies

1 unit of courses from the Humanities and Arts or Social Sciences Requirements

3 Spanish language courses (or three HI courses, or other combination of courses in humanities/arts or social sciences)

1 unit Interactive Project at Costa Rica

Exchange Program Option:

Students may receive an International Studies minor through an exchange program to Latin America or the Humanities program in Madrid.

1 unit International Core (see below for more options)

SP 3523 Topics in Latin American Culture [in Spanish]

SP 3526 Comparative Business Environments [in Spanish]

HU 4411 Senior Seminar in International Studies

2 units of Spanish language courses (this might include credit from the Humanities and Arts Requirement completed in Madrid)

International experience in an exchange program to Monterry, Mexico or the humanities program in Spain

Consider these options for the International Studies Core in the Spanish Track

History Course:

Any history course in global, European, Asian, African, or Latin American history

SP 3523 Topics in Latin American Culture [in Spanish]

SP 3525 Spanish American Film/Media: Cultural Issues [in Spanish]

Cross-Cultural Course:

HU 3411 Pro-Seminar in Global Perspectives

SOC 1202 Sociological Concepts and Comparative Analysis

PSY 2406 Cross-Cultural Psychology

PY 2716 Philosophy of Difference

SP 3524 Spanish American Literature in the Twentieth Century [in Spanish]

SP 3525 Spanish American Film/Media: Cultural Issues [in Spanish]

SP 3526 Comparative Business Environments [in Spanish]

SP 3527 Technical and Business Spanish [in Spanish]

HU 4411 Senior Seminar in International Studies

When taken as preparation for an Interactive Project Costa Rica or Puerto Rico, ID 2050 may count towards the electives of the Spanish Track of the International Studies minor.

Since the background and goals of each student are different, these requirements are flexible. In essence, the Spanish Track is a sample program that demonstrates how students with experience at one of the Project Centers in Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Madrid, or the Monterry exchange program may shape the minor to meet their goals.
