Report Production
This section contains resources that provide information about the structure of IQP proposals and IQP reports and tips on formatting and writing proposals and reports.
Generally, advisors have students prepare a proposal for their IQP. Faculty and students can find information about the purpose of the proposal and ideas for how to write the proposal in the IQP Proposal Guidelines and Tips for Writing an IQP Proposal (Word Document). An example for a Format of the Proposal (Word Document) may be useful. For faculty, there are also tips on Responding to Project Writing (Word Document).
Guidance is also available for how to develop and write specific chapters of the IQP proposal and IQP report.
For Writing the Introduction (Word Document), students can organize their ideas around Rhetorical Moves in Proposal Introduction (Word Document). Some ideas relating to introductions can also be found in Tips for Writing an IQP Proposal (Word Document).
For Writing a Literature Review, or background section, students can also organize their ideas around Rhetorical Moves in Literature Review Chapter (Word Document). Exercises can be given to students to help them structure and write their Background Draft (Word Document) and how to effectively Evaluate Journal Articles (Word Document). Some ideas relating to background chapters can also be found in Tips for Writing an IQP Proposal (Word Document).
Some ideas for writing research method chapters can be found in Tips for Writing an IQP Proposal (Word Document).
Both IQP proposals and IQP reports can be formatted in a variety of ways and can use a variety of styles, for example, citations and section numbering and headings. One Model For Formatting a proposal (Word Document) is used by many faculty, but Another Model for Formatting a proposal (Word Document) has also been used successfully.
Advisors have required students to use different citations styles, including APA Style, a commonly used editorial style for writing in the social and behavioral sciences, and MLA Style, another widely accepted standard for research papers.
