Areas of Interest
The theoretical perspective unifying my work is an interest in exploring and promoting socio-technical systems change for sustainability transitions. I employ this perspective to analyze how societies are responding to the growing imperative to redevelop infrastructural systems to meet basic humans needs while sustaining healthy societies and environments, and to illuminate how “technological” innovation emerges through complex actor-network dynamics and highly contested social as well as technical and economic processes.
My work presently focuses on two complementary areas -- US electrical systems and informal settlement upgrading in South Africa – that represent divergent social and cultural contexts associated with the global sustainability challenges of climate change and rapid urbanization. In both cases, I am interested in how knowledge creation, policy, innovation and technological change occurs and is measured, not only as a researcher, but as an educator and change agent working with others across disciplines and social sectors.
My work also contributes to developing new approaches to educating engineers and scientists to meet the challenge of sustainability. I do this as a teacher in WPI’s unique project-based Global Perspective Program and as a researcher examining how these educational experiences impact students and the communities where they work.
