Undergraduate Programs

Physicists are problem solvers, and there may be no better place to learn to solve problems than WPI. The excitement that propelled physicists toward some of the most dramatic scientific breakthroughs of the last century—radar, lasers, fiber optics, transistors, semiconductors, and medical imaging— continues to invigorate WPI's physics faculty and students.

At WPI, all physics majors begin their studies by focusing on the fundamental principles of classical and modern physics, which includes forces/energy, motion/kinetics, the nature of electricity and magnetism, the nature of matter, and the relativistic and quantum nature of the universe. Working with your academic advisor, you will create a program that meets your individual needs and interests, choosing either a traditional program of physics study or one that has engineering applications to such areas as computational or thermal physics, biophysics, green energy, optics, electromagnetism, or nuclear science.

WPI's Physics Program prepares you for traditional fields like teaching or research; it can also be a component to positions in management, engineering, computer science, and technical writing.

The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. -Albert Einstein
