British University Rankings

UK universities are ranked in various ways. The results of the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) determine funding formulas from the British government. Most British faculty despise the RAE process but they take its results very seriously. Any department with an RAE rating of 5 or 5* (the highest rating) is worth consideration, as such a rating indicates that serious research is being done in that subject at that university.  Check the program websites as the department may or may not have strengths in the particular area that interests you, regardless of the overall departmental rating.  Newspaper rankings are analogous to the U.S. News rankings in the US, but they are less influential since so many publications do them, each idiosyncratically. Where possible look for ratings of individual programs rather than of universities as a whole. Take them for what they are worth, more as a starting point rather than as a definitive assessment:
