Circulation Policies for Academic and Research Collaborative Borrowers

Loans

ARC borrowers may borrow up to 5 items at a time. Items may be renewed if a hold has not been placed on it by another patron. A hold is a request by a patron that the item be reserved for them when it is returned. Items are subject to immediate recall if needed by a WPI faculty member for course reserve purposes only. If the item is not returned within 6 days of the recall notice, a fine will be charged.

Books, Bestesllers, CDs, and Audio Books may be borrowed for 4 weeks. They may be renewed up to 3 times for an additional 4 weeks each time.

Videos (DVD and VHS formats) may be borrowed for 7 days with 1 renewal of an additional 7 days. Some exceptions to availability apply.

Reserves may be borrowed for 2 hours and must be used in the library.

Reference items, Special Collection items, Newspapers, and Journals do not circulate. They may only be used within the Library.

Laptop computers and Tech Suites are not available for ARC members.

Renewals

Items may be renewed if a hold has not been placed on it by another patron. A hold is a request by a patron that the item be reserved for them when it is returned. There are two ways to renew items:

Lost Items

Twenty-eight days after the due date an item is marked as lost. If a patron has one lost item, s/he will be blocked from checking out any more materials. Their record will not be cleared until the item has been returned or the bill has been paid. No refunds will be issued after 6 months.

Fines/Fees

Items not returned by the due date are fined on a per day basis. There is a 3 day grace period for books. There is no maximum fine. The patron will be blocked from charging additional items out for amounts exceeding $15.00.

Books $.10/day
Reserves $.50/hour
Recalled items $1.00/day

Damaged Items

Materials that are damaged will be charged an appropriate fee for replacement or repair. Patrons will have two weeks from date of notification to dispute the invoice. After the two week period, all invoices are final.

Notices

Notices are sent as a courtesy to remind patrons of the due dates. They will be sent via email, if supplied, or paper copy. The library does not assume responsibility for the non-receipt of notices. Failure to receive an overdue notice does not absolve patrons from returning materials late.

Courtesy notices are sent 7 days before an item's due date as a reminder to either return or renew the item.

Overdue notices are sent 7 and 14 days after an item's due date as a reminder that the item was not returned on time and fines are being charged.

Bills are sent 28 days after an item's due date and include the replacement cost of the item.
