Types of Information Literacy Instruction
Sessions can be geared to meet faculty objectives for students, such as utilizing quality sources, developing strong bibliographies, and avoiding plagiarism, or can be general overviews of library services and resources. Library Tour - During New Student Orientation
We offer an overview of the building's layout, holdings, and services, but do not offer any in-depth instruction. Generally 15 - 30 minutes, also a self-guided audio tour is available.
Course-Related Instruction
Librarians offer instruction sessions that provide information about sources and research strategies for a specific course or assignment. Usually one class period long. To get a better idea of what such sessions can entail, please see Course-related Resources. For example ...
- Biomedical Engineering Design - we partner with faculty to introduce biomedical information resources, such as locating technical handbooks, finding scholarly information, and patent searching. We can offer a hands-on research experience in the library computer classroom.
Course-Integrated Instruction
Reference librarians collaborate with faculty to integrate library instruction into courses that contain a significant research component or that require the use of specialized electronic or print resources. Such instruction consists of lectures, learning activities and group work presented in short sessions throughout the term. If you are interested in such a collaboration, please contact us. - Elements of Writing - we introduce information perspectives and research to students working on multimedia writing projects. After the in class session, we follow up with myWPI discussion board on their research. Later in the term after students review the Citing Sources section of the online Research Circuit tutorial a second interactive session in the library computer lab is held on citing information properly.
Sessions are available either in your classroom or hands-on in the Library Computer classroom. Should you be interested in requesting a session, please use the Library Instruction Request Form.
myWPI-Integrated Instruction
Librarians also collaborate with faculty to integrate library instruction into courses sites in order to offer just-in-time online tutorials for students enrolled.
