"Ecological responses to anthropogenic habitat changes may be complex and, in many cases, are still poorly understood, and therefore a great deal of basic research is necessary to inform policy decisions related to the management of natural systems."

— Professor Lauren Mathews

Welcome to Environmental and Sustainability Studies

Air and water pollution. Global warming. Ozone depletion. Hazardous waste. Preserving biological diversity. These are just a few of the environmental concerns the world is dealing with today. At WPI, we have never shied away from a challenge, and we will face the challenge to advance ecological integrity while ensuring economic prosperity and social equity.

To that end, WPI has established a bachelor of arts degree program in environmental  and sustainability studies. The mission of the Environmental  and Sustainability Studies Program is to provide our students with an interdisciplinary, liberal arts education with a focus on analyzing the consequences of human-induced changes to the environment.

Through WPI’s project-enhanced curriculum, and its Global Perspective Program, students majoring in environmental studies will have the opportunity to deal with environmental issues in practical, hands-on ways through experiential learning projects with external sponsors in the United States and abroad.
