Why Environmental Engineering?

Fresh air to breathe. Clean drinking water. These simple pleasures we often take for granted are made possible by environmental engineers. Protecting the public health and the natural environment are two of the biggest challenges facing society today. The Environmental Engineering program at WPI will prepare you to face those challenges head-on.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, environmental engineering employment opportunities will grow much faster than other areas of employment in the U.S., with more than 27% growth projected through 2014. Environmental Engineering is a field of major importance to the Earth's future. Engineers work to protect our environment from future damage and to correct existing problems. They design solutions for providing safe air and water, for proper disposal of wastes, and for controlling pollution.
