Letter of Transmittal
A letter of transmittal is addressed to the primary recipient of the report. It contains the report title, project number, and distribution list.
Example:
Professor Harry T. Towler May 20, 2004
Electrical Engineering Department
WPI
Worcester, MA 01609
Dear Professor Towler:
Attached is one copy of the Major Qualifying report: Analysis
of a Gallium Arsenide-Laser Diode, Project Number FCJ 2320.
Sincerely,
Steven T. Kelley
Distribution:
Professor William B. Hines: 1 copy
Preface
The preface explains the purpose and scope of the report (not the project) and its relations to other reports in the same program. It states to whom it is addressed and how it can be used. It may also include the acknowledgments.
Acknowledgments
Names of each person and organization that has contributed to the work appear in the Acknowledgments. Sometimes the nature of the contribution is described. (For example, permission for the use of equipment, facilities and documents.)
Table of Contents
This table lists in sequence the name of each heading or subheading and the corresponding page number. The names should be a clear indication of the contents of the section. Do not use nondescriptive titles like Method (note the often used word Methodology is normally incorrect), Procedures, etc.
Use the decimal numbering system.
Example: from "Analysis of a Gallium Arsenide Laser Diode"

Abstract
The Abstract is one of the most important parts of the report. It is a very brief but clear description of what the report is all about, summarizing the work done and the results (Informative Abstract). It should not exceed 80 words, and may also be used as the project description in the transcript. (Note that the recommended length of the abstract differs from the suggestions in the PIMELL Module on "Report Writing." Consult your advisor about the preferred form.)
Example:
The theory of a GaAs laser is discussed. Various experiments were carried out which show that the simple energy band model is sufficrient to explain the threshold conditions, spectral and spatial distribution of the radiation in a first approximation.Maintained by webmaster@wpi.edu
