About BEI
The Bioengineering Institute (BEI) was launched in 2002 at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) to complement the university's strategic plan for advancing its programs in life sciences research and education. Since then, WPI has invested more than $100 million in new research laboratories, core facilities, business incubation space, and the recruitment of new faculty investigators and graduate students.
The Bioengineering Institute's mission within the university is to move programs from the spark of an idea, through the rigors of applied research and technology development, on to commercialization. This is done by securing funding, fostering collaborations, and creating space for multi-disciplinary teams to coalesce around specific projects.
The Bioengineering Institute is focused on translating scientific advances into new products, processes or therapies. It combines targeted basic research on key questions that must be answered to speed innovation towards an identified goal, with the applied research and development that can carry new knowledge into the clinic or the marketplace.
Since 2002, the investigators working through the BEI have been awarded more than $20 million in funding for projects as diverse as remote medical sensors, next-generation prosthetics, biomaterials for tissue scaffolds and advanced surface chemistry for label-free diagnostic devices. The common theme in all this work is that it leverages extant WPI faculty expertise to rapidly commercialize new products that meet important needs.
As the Bioengineering Institute has grown and matured, ongoing programs have coalesced around three general platforms for research and product development—they are bioengineered materials, tissue regeneration, sensors and imaging.
