Mendelson's areas of research and interest include biomedical sensors for invasive and noninvasive applications, optical interactions with biological media, patient monitoring, physiological signal processing and real-time physiological data acquisition.
Mendelson joined the faculty at WPI as an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering and has been an Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering since 1989. Since joining the WPI faculty he has received several awards, including The admiral Ralph Earle Medal "In recognition of the High Merit of Contribution to the Field of Noninvasive Monitoring of Blood Oxygen Levels" from the Worcester Engineering Society in 1985. He also received the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society - Early Career Achievement Award in 1992.
