WPI courses open to motivated High School Students

In Summer 2010, WPI will offer selected college courses to motivated and gifted high school students. Classes will be held July 1-August 14 and carry full college credit.

*NEW* Digital Art & Animation

Get creative this summer! Learn about creating digital art and animation. In this week long day program, work with WPI faculty and cutting edge programs in the field of digital arts.

July 5-9 (9am-4pm)

Cost: $495

Audience: High school grades 10-12

 

*NEW* Emerging Filmmakers

Write, create, act and direct a short film!  In this week-long residential program at WPI, you will learn how to write a script and to stage, shoot, and edit your own short narrative film (digital video format).  Students will be challenged to "think outside the box" of mainstream Hollywood cinema by having to follow the guidelines of the Dogma 95 Film Manifesto, which emphasizes natural lighting, shooting on location, found props, and unconventional stories.  At week end, WPI will host a film premier to showcase your finished work.  This program will be taught by Dr. John Sanbonmatsu, a WPI faculty member who is a philosophy professor and independent filmmaker.

FRONTIERS@WPI

This residential research and learning experience challenges soon to be high school juniors and seniors to explore the outer limits of knowledge in science, mathematics and engineering. You will learn from outstanding professors using state of the art technology. Applications deadline May 15, 2010.

Frontiers I :  July 11-23, 2010  

Frontiers II Robotics track: July 25 – August 3, 2010

Cost: $1975 for Frontiers I, $1525 for Frontiers II, and $3350 for both Frontiers I and II

Audience: High school Juniors and seniors

 

*NEW*HORIZON

A biology-focused residential program for girls. Spend a week with WPI faculty in our biology labs. Isolate DNA, detect genes, genetically engineer bacteria, and participate in other hands-on activities.

Application deadline: May 30

August 2–6

Cost: $795

Audience: High school girls, grades 9 and 10

 

*NEW* Introduction to Engineering Software

This five-day (4 hours/day) hands-on workshop is designed for students who wish to gain experience with programming and data analysis using MATLAB, Mathcad, and LabVIEW. The workshop includes fundamentals of programming, scripts and functions, plotting and visualization, data acquisition, basic statistics, and data analysis. It is not offered for academic credit.

Audience: High School

 

Launch: Biology

Explore the ways in which the field of biotechnology affects our everyday life. Working in our biotech lab, you'll have a chance to isolate your own DNA, conduct a molecular medical investigation, create root beer using fermentation, or analyze the foods we eat to see if they have been genetically modified. You'll have a chance to carry out your own scientific investigations and share your findings with your family at the end of the week along with some homemade liquid nitrogen ice cream! This is a day program meeting between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Launch: Chemistry

Have you ever wanted to work with bubbling flasks of colored concoctions? Ever think about engineering DNA or proteins? In our chemistry and biochemistry labs, you'll alter liquids at the flick of a wrist, wield light and electricity, and cut and splice genes to create creatures that glow. By the weeks end you'll be dazzling your friends and family with all of your newfound talents. This is a day program meeting between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Audience: High school freshmen and sophomores

 

Launch: Interactive Media and Game Design

Want to know how computer games are made? You'll learn how to use a 3D video game engine to create a game with graphics, sound, and animation. You'll work in teams to undertake hands-on lab exercises to understand important computer science and artistic design concepts related to interactive media. By the end of the week, you will have created a project demonstrating your newfound skills with cool graphics and amazing animation, complete with audio and interactivity. This is a day program meeting between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

August 9-13

Audience: High school freshmen and sophomores

 

Launch: Robotics

Discover the science and technology of this exciting field. You'll learn about mechanical design, sensors, and programming. You'll build designs using Vex robots and program them using EasyC. Challenging robotics problems will culminate in a competition between student groups at the end of the week. This is a day program meeting between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

August 9-13

Audience: High school freshmen and sophomores

 

Pre-Calculus

A 5 week course offered in the third summer term for students wishes to gain a solid foundation for calculus. This course is open to both high school, undergraduate and graduate students. It is not offered for credit.

Sports Programs

Join us for our 34th year of Summer Sports Camps!      

This summer WPI will offer sports camps for boys and girls ages 7-18 depending on the camp. Programs will be offered June - August and will feature baseball, basketball, field hockey, rowing, soccer and volleyball. Come to WPI to learn new skills, enhance your athletic abilities, meet new friends and have fun! 

You will work in small groups getting expert coaching from WPI's Youth Coaches. 

Dates offered Summer 2010: June - August –depending on camp

Cost:  $100 -$450 depending on camp

 

NOTE: All full day K-12 programs include lunch, materials, a T-shirt, admission to field trips and transportation unless specifically noted otherwise.

NOTE: A supervised after care program called "Odeum Activities" is available where kids can explore concepts introduced in other programs and have fun with their friends. A snack and water will be provided.
