2004 Winners

Worcester Polytechnic Institute presented its second annual Technological Humanist Awards to seven outstanding Massachusetts high school teachers during a dinner and awards ceremony in the Campus Center Odeum on May 6, 2003. Seventy nominations were received from 46 Massahcusetts high schools.

Jacqueline Briant, who teaches AP statistics and probability at Bishop Feenhan High School in Attleboro, won the First-Place Award, which included a $5,000 cash prize to be used for equipment purchases, professional development or other activities that enhance education at her school. A trophy to be displayed in the school was also presented at the ceremony. Jaimeson Porter submitted the winning essay.

Michael Sullivan, the Director of Science at Boston Latin Academy, received the Second-Place Award, which included $2,500 and a trophy for the school. Thomas Huynh wrote the winning essay.

Alice Apostolou, a teacher of AP Chemistry and Science at Tahanto Regional High School in Boylston, and Keith Azevedo, who teaches Environmental Issues at Mansfield High School, tied for the Third-Place Award. Ms. Apostolou was nominated by Jeffrey Martin. Amelia McWhirk wrote the winning essay for Mr. Azevedo, who was also nominated by Travis Dagenais and Katrina Elich. Both teachers received $1,500 and a trophy.

The three Honorable Mention Award recipients each received $500. They are:


Timothy Ball, an Integrated Math 2 & Integrated Math 3 teacher at Westfield Vocational Technical High School. He was nominated by Levi Porter.


Carrie Causey-Foote, an Earth Science Teacher at Thayer Academy in Braintree. She was nominated by Anthony Aiello.


Lori Cooney, a teacher of Elements in Web Design at Bishop Connolly High School in Fall River. Erin Malone wrote the winning essay for Ms. Cooney, who was also nominated by Vanessa Coelho.
