First Year Experience

    College—A new home, new friends, roommates, and a new schedule. Where do I eat? Where do I get my books? How do I join a club? Where are my classes? Where can I do my laundry? The transition to your new life at WPI is a big, but rewarding experience. WPI's Office of the First Year is here to help you along the way.

 

Getting Started at WPI

Overview

     Prior to arriving at WPI in August, you are asked to complete a series of steps. These steps include creating an email account, filling out a number of housing and health forms, choosing a meal plan, selecting courses for A and B terms, and learning more about billing and payment plans. To aid with this process, we have created a Welcome Website with all of the necessary information, and our First Year Experience brochure will help you learn more about some of the special programs we offer here at WPI.

Get More Insight

Your Insight team will be communicating with you regarding this event.

Great Problems Seminars: These are two-term courses defined by the grand challenges that science, engineering, and society face in the 21st century. The Great Problems Seminars are an excellent introduction to project work at WPI and will help you develop a variety of problem solving skills.

Insight Program: The Insight program provides you with a strong support network consisting of a Faculty Advisor (FA), a student leader called a Community Advisor (CA), and a Resident Advisor (RA) to help alleviate any stress associated with transitioning from high school to college.

Student Resources: WPI offers a number of different resources ranging from academic advising and tutoring programs to an assortment career counseling services. Be sure to check this page out to learn a little bit more about the services we offer at WPI!

 

Course Registration

    An interactive, web-based program called Designs guides you through the course selection process. You are asked to choose classes for your first two terms at WPI by July 1st, with course registration for C and D terms taking place later on in the year. This program contains an academic overview for different majors, as well as placement exams that assist you in deciding which courses you should enroll in.

 

Arriving at WPI

New Student Orientation

    New Student Orientation takes place from August 21-24 and provides you with the opportunity to participate in both social and academic programs. This crash course in all things WPI allows you to immediately feel at home on campus and feel connected to the WPI community. The schedule for New Student Orientation can be found on the Student Activities Website.

 

Clubs and Organizations

    Student involvement on campus fosters the growth of vital skills outside the classroom, such as ethical leadership and teamwork. WPI has over 190 different clubs and organizations on campus, providing you with a variety of different options for getting involved.
