Jeremy Hitchcock '04

“Our company approach is 'work hard, play hard,'”

Jeremy Hitchcock '04 sticks to a seemingly typical 9 to 5 routine. But there isn't anything typical about this 26-year-old.

Since 2005, he has been the CEO and CFO of Dynamic Network Services Inc. (DynDNS), which works behind the scenes enabling clients to run Internet services efficiently and quickly on their computers. The Manchester, N.H.-based company boasts an international clientele of Fortune 500 companies and a customer base of several million users; it recently was named the "Best Small Company to Work For" in New Hampshire in 2007, and in January, DynDNS received an "Innovation Rocks!" award from the Business Resource Center at the state's Division of Economic Development.

"Our company approach is 'work hard, play hard,'" Hitchcock says. "Our benefits include a fully stocked break room, which is unheard of in a small company. We go off-site for monthly corporate updates and quarterly excursions."

Working side-by-side with Hitchcock is his college friend Tom Daly '04, the president and CTO. (Two other alumni are among the 21 employees.) "We balance each other," Hitchcock says of Daly. "I focus on computers, while Tom is very good at software design and network engineering. We are both responsible for much of the company's success."

Hitchcock began volunteering at DynDNS in 2001, while he was a student majoring in management information systems. "There were two other owners back then," he explains. "The following year, I began doing some accounting work for pay. In 2003, Tom and I became owners and assumed our current positions in 2005."

Hitchcock credits his undergraduate experience for his success today. "The academic calendar was excellent preparation for the real world and the way employers think," he says. "WPI graduates get things done."

“The educational experience was fabulous,” he continues, “and the project emphasis was awesome.” Employing the collaboration skills he honed at WPI, thanks to the university’s project-enriched curriculum, Hitchcock takes very seriously each project he and his DynDNS team are responsible for. “Each member of the team has a vote,” he says, “and everyone has strengths and weaknesses to be considered.”

In his spare time, Hitchcock plays the trombone and dabbles in hydroponics. An active alumnus, he and his wife, Liz (Cash) Hitchcock ’02, belong to the Greater New Hampshire Alumni Chapter; he also works with the WPI Collaborative for Entrepreneurship and Innovation’s Venture Forum, a monthly meeting of industry professionals from the greater Worcester area. His sister, Julie, is a WPI sophomore which, “makes it easy to say connected,” he notes.

Hitchcock also maintains a visible community presence. He serves on numerous business and educational boards and supports his high school’s endowment fund. “I’m really blessed,” he says, “so I think it’s only fair to give back.”
