Holden Teacher Wins First Technological Humanist Award

WPI presented its inaugural Technological Humanist Awards to seven outstanding Massachusetts high school teachers May 1, 2003. P. Brady Townsend, who teaches math at Wachusett Regional High School in Holden, received the First-Place Award, which included $5,000 to be used for equipment purchases, professional development or other activities that enhance education at his school.

Lecturer Unfazed by Die-in

In late April two student protesters (one from Clark, the other from WPI) interrupted a WPI lecture on military aircraft. The students, smeared with ketchup and cherry Kool-Aid, barely distracted Stephen N. Finger, executive vice-president of Pratt & Whitney Aircraft. Incredulous that the die-in hadn't caused much of a disruption, the Clark student commented, "We have better things to do than just lie there."

Marketing Milestones: New Campus Signage; TV ad runs in Hartford

The Hill is alive with the sound of...construction. Another initiative of WPI's marketing plan comes to fruition with the installation of new campus signs. They feature WPI's new logo in black and crimson with brushed aluminum accents, mounted on granite bases. Also, the university's television commercial, "WPI Was There," airs through May 25 in Boston -- and, for the first time, in the Hartford/New Haven market.

Kennedy and McGovern Herald Launch of Bioengineering Institute

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy and Rep. James P. McGovern helped WPI celebrate the opening of its Bioengineering Institute at a ceremony on April 24. During a presentation to central Massachusetts business leaders, Kennedy and McGovern laid out the vision of BEI as a catalyst for economic growth by facilitating the conversion of research discoveries into new products and new companies in the region.

Business Program Wins Seal of Approval

The bachelor's and master's degree programs in business at WPI achieved accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Fewer than 21 percent of all business programs nationwide are accredited. In granting its seal of approval, the AACSB board cited WPI's identification of a unique mission and an interdisciplinary and project-based curriculum that includes capstone experiences.
