Postcard Antarctica: The Single-Cell Life

Manufacturing engineering student Jeff Blair '04 heads to the coldest, windiest, most inhospitable place on earth to test his underwater camera. If it works, we'll finally find out what foraminifera--large single-celled organisms that populate the ocean floor-- do all winter long.

Society of Women Engineers Lauds Emily Anesta '05

Emily Anesta '05, electrical and computer engineering major, won the Society of Women Engineers' Lillian Moeller Gilbreth Memorial Scholarship. The $6,000 award is made to one junior or senior engineering student and is renewable for one additional year. The scholarship committee reviewed over 800 applications before choosing Anesta for the SWE award.

Economic Summit Highlights MedTech Opportunities

The seventh annual "Manufacturing Our Future: An Economic Summit" on Oct. 20 in Worcester promotes new partnerships between central Massachusetts manufacturers and the medical technology sector. Governor Mitt Romney is the keynote speaker. Attendees can access the latest initiatives: WPI's Bioengineering Institute; research at the UMass Medical School; and Worcester's Gateway Park, the newest location for bioengineering, biotechnology research and manufacturing.

Missing a WPI connection? Is Worcester just too far from Pittsburgh? Join the Pittsburgh Alumni Club starting this fall. Area alumni will gather several times a year for social, cultural and sporting events. The first event will be in November. Established in 1961, the awards recognize professional achievement by WPI alumni and service involvement with the Alumni Association and the university. 6. SPORTS: Homecoming Highlights

Women's soccer scored the big win during Homecoming Weekend, besting Babson 3-0. Men's soccer put up their first loss of the year after eight straight wins, losing to the Coast Guard team 1-0. Men's football didn't fare much better, losing to Norwich University 35-28.
